The Kernow Cup team tournament made a welcome return after a three year absence to Truro School’s Ben Ainslie Sports Centre at the weekend, with 8 teams from across Cornwall battling it out for the trophy.
All the teams
The teams were split into two groups of 4, and each played matches of men’s and women’s doubles and two mixed doubles games, with a mix of social and league clubs in both groups.
Action in the hall
The first group, with Truro Titans, Tecans A, Callington and Falmouth B teams, had some close fought games before favourites Callington finally topped the group unbeaten.
The other group was made up of Truro A, Tecans B, Choughs and Falmouth A, and they also had some good battles, with Falmouth winning overall, to go through to the final.
The play-offs consisted of 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed teams playing each other, with some nail-biting games and very close results. Truro A just got the better of Tecans A by 5 points for 2nd place, in third place Choughs beat Truro Titans by only 3 points, and Tecans B won against Falmouth B in fourth spot.
Final men’s doubles
Women’s doubles finalists
The final between Falmouth A and Callington had some tight games as Callington won both the men’s and the women’s doubles, then both mixed games were split as Falmouth fought back, but Callington’s strength and experience told overall as they ran out worthy champions to finish a very enjoyable day.
